How Does Mediation Work?

This week is Mediation Week! Family solicitor shares their experiences of mediation, and how it can help.

Today's blog asks: How Does Mediation Work?
Firstly, how do you access mediation? There are two easy ways to do this:
  1. You can self-refer to mediation
  2. Be referred by your Solicitor to an experienced mediator
Next, we look at how mediation works for you.
Mediation is a bespoke process, it is tailored to your needs, concerns and interests.  Mediators listen to find out what is important to you and your family.  The process helps you to make decisions to deal with things that when relationships change.
The focus is on finding the best way forward with practical solutions that works for everybody, including your children if you have them.
You will have a number of sessions together with the mediator which lasts around 1.5 hours.  These sessions are personalised to you, as they are designed by both you and your partner.
When you are both satisfied with the choices and decisions you have reached, your solicitors will then assist you with legal formalities, if required.
