About Toby

Toby is a Solicitor within our Family team, which is led by Jonathan Whettingsteel.

Having qualified as a Solicitor in 2025, Toby has developed his experience in a number of disciplines, both prior to this and subsequently.

Toby’s qualifications include an undergraduate degree in Criminology and Sociology and a graduate Diploma in Law. Toby has also completed the Legal Practice Course and is a member of Resolution.

Toby’s experience includes:

  • Acting for a client who was claiming political asylum with c£20m in assets where there was a dispute as to whether the bulk of the assets, which were held in a foreign jurisdiction, were accessible as they had been frozen by a foreign government. This case also involved complex children matters.
  • Acting for a client who owned a substantial garden centre and farming business, with valuations required for the farm, live and deadstock, the land on which the garden centre was based and the garden centre / farming business itself.
  • Acting in a case where there were cross applications in the divorce proceedings with the parties disagreeing as to whether the proceedings should take place in the UK or the USA.
  • Acting for a mother in a case where there were significant safeguarding concerns, which also involved financial remedy proceedings.
  • Acting for a client in financial remedy proceedings for a foreign national who was domiciled in England and Wales and whose pension was inaccessible as it was based in a foreign jurisdiction.

Why A Career In Law?

Toby chose to pursue a career in Law due to having a desire to help people.

“I have seen family members go through a divorce and how they have come out the other side of the process as happier and more confident people, and my goal is to try and help this be the case for every client I work for.”

Toby very much enjoys the personal side of Family Law, and the ability to get to know clients and support them through what can be a challenging time in their lives.

Supporting Clients

Toby supports clients with empathy and understanding.

“No two clients are the same and understanding a client's situation and goals is in my opinion key to a successful client-lawyer relationship. I seek to be a calm and reassuring presence throughout what can be an overwhelming and stressful time, ensuring that I speak to clients in understandable terms and taking a "no question is too much" attitude.”

Toby seeks to be a firm but fair lawyer, who will fight for client interests, whilst also being realistic and pragmatic when necessary.

Rewarding Elements

For Toby, the most rewarding element is the relationships he builds with clients, and seeing them evolve and grow during his time working with them.

“It is about helping clients either gain clarity over their future, or simply reclaim their freedom to be able to live their lives following what can be a stressful time.”

Looking To The Future

Toby has a passion for mentoring and helping to guide the next generation.

“Although I am early on in my career I have already taken on multiple mentoring roles for university students who are seeking a career in law.”

Professionally, Toby’s goal is to progress to a point where he is leading a team or office, with a strong emphasis on both personal and professional growth for everyone.
