    About Debbie

    Debbie is a Senior Associate Solicitor within our Childcare team, which is led by Sarah Ferrari.

    Having qualified as a Solicitor in 1994, Debbie has a wealth of experience in a number of disciplines.

    Debbie is also a member of the Law Society's Children panel.

    Debbie’s specialisms include:

    • Care proceedings
    • Adoption
    • Special Guardianship
    • Other orders relating to children

    Having specialised in children’s law throughout her career, Debbie supports parents and children when local authorities are considering intervening, helping families to  stay together where it can be made safe to do so, and advising families through these processes.

    Why A Career In Law?

    Debbie admits that she fell into studying law but, on doing so, found out that she loved it.

    “I chose to specialise in children's law because I love helping families and this work has a huge impact on people's lives and feels important. I like to think I can make a difference.”

    Supporting Clients

    In Debbie’s view, the most effective way to help her clients is to listen supportively, before explaining the complexities of the legal process and then advising on realistic outcomes and putting forward their case in the best possible light.

    “We work with clients facing numerous difficulties in their lives, and understand that everyone is different and learns or processes things differently. We are sensitive to the hardships and circumstances of our clients; everyone is an individual.”

    Rewarding Elements

    For Debbie, the most rewarding part of her role is helping people get the best outcome possible, based on the facts of the case.

    A Historical Trial That Debbie Would Have Liked To Have Attended

    Debbie would have liked to have been involved in the Victoria Gillick case, which considered at what age young people can make decisions for their own wellbeing, independently of their parents.

    “The voice of young people in the work that we do is very important to me. I represent a lot of young people, many of whom I see and work with directly. I am keen their wishes are given all possible weight in court.”
