EHRC responds to proposals for replacing the Human Rights Act

  • Posted

The Queen's Speech, which was delivered on 27 May 2015, referred to the government bringing forward proposals for a British Bill of Rights to replace the Human Rights Act 1998.

In response to the proposals, the Equality and Human Rights Commission has stated that it "would not support a reversal of the leading global role Britain has long played in protecting and promoting human rights".

The EHRC has also published a letter addressed to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights, which stresses the importance of the rights protected by the HRA 1998 and warns that any changes to the legal framework should not weaken protection of these rights.
